Another Push to Raise Indiana’s Cigarette Tax

There’s another push to raise Indiana’s cigarette tax by two dollars a pack. During a Raise it For Health Coalition briefing, pediatrician Emily Scott says there’s a good reason to raise the price.

Dr. Scott says raising the price of cigarettes can also help reinvest in additional health benefits for Hoosiers. She noted that even though the state is rated in the top ten states in the country for obesity, smoking, maternal and infant mortality, the state spends 49th of 50 states in health spending. Scott says if a woman smokes during pregnancy, she is at risk of not having a health baby. She says raising the cigarette tax is a good way to start protecting Indiana’s children.
