Knox County officials are still working out the particulars in funding juvenile transport back and forth from detention centers to hearings in the county. The issue came up, following the closure of the Vincennes-based Southwest Indiana Regional Youth Village earlier this year.
County officials believe the cost could reach a million dollars or more for the coming year. Knox County Commissioner Trent Hinkle believes the increase in cost is due not just to the Youth Village closing, but the increased number and seriousness of the alleged crimes.
County officials consider funding the juvenile transport system the largest issue they will face in September’s budget hearings.
