In the last couple of months before budget talks begin, the Knox County Council is still working toward answers for juvenile inmate transport. The costly issue came up with the closure of the Southwest Indiana Regional Youth Village earlier this year.
Knox County Council president Rich Chattin says all those involved are working toward funding what could be a seven-digit budget item. The youth offender budget for this year was set at 600-thousand dollars– even with the Youth Village in place for part of the year. Chattin believes part of the reason was due to some higher-profile young offenders.
In preparation, the Knox County Sheriff’s office has added a dedicated deputy to transport juvenile offenders to and from other youth detention centers.
