Yesterday was the 246th anniversary of the capture of Fort Sackville by American forces led by George Rogers Clark. The capture happened on February 25th, 1779 near the site of the George Rogers Clark Memorial in Vincennes.
The George Rogers Clark National Park rests on the former fort’s site today. Joe Herron is the park’s chief ranger; he says actually, the march to capture the fort was harder than the battle itself. The annual Clark March to remember the soldiers’ trek to Vincennes happened last weekend. Herron says the march could have been tougher than we imagined, due to the clothing the men were wearing.
The crossing of the flooded Wabash River was the last part of an overall journey from Fort Kaskaskia across Illinois to cross into Indiana just south of Vincennes. The victory caused the surrender of Fort Sackville by British officer Henry Hamilton.
