The Vincennes City Council has approved on first reading an ordinance to clarify the use of commercial properties in the downtown commercial district.
If approved on final reading, the ordinance clarifies the first floor areas are to be exclusively used for retail sales, eating and drinking locations, personal and professional services, cultural and entertainment use. The new ordinance excludes first floor residential dwellings, storage, and industrial use. Residential dwellings—such as “loft” apartments—will be allowed downtown on the second floor and higher.
Further, the new ordinance requires at least 70 percent of the façade facing the dedicated to clear glass windows. Finally, first-floor entrances must face the sidewalk in front of the location.
