Republicans including 8th District Congressman Mark Messmer, welcomed the end of the shutdown, saying it brings relief to federal workers, veterans, and families relying on programs like SNAP and WIC. They criticized Democrats for holding the government hostage over political disagreements. Another person who voted to end the shutdown is Eastern Illinois Congresswoman Mary Miller.
Democrats, including Northwest Indiana Congressman Frank Mrvan, opposed the agreement, arguing it fails to protect affordable health care and veterans’ benefits. Mrvan said the fight for healthcare access will continue.
