Shirley A. Smith, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister who dedicated her life to her family and work, passed away on February 2, 2026, in her hometown of Vincennes, IN, where she was born on August 3, 1935.
Embraced by her community, Shirley led a life marked by kindness and a strong work ethic. She grew up with a close-knit family and attended the local high school, graduating with the respect of her teachers and peers alike. Shirley then embarked on a fruitful career, spending her years as a much-admired manager at a local grocery store, where she was known for her unwavering dedication and the care she bestowed upon both her employees and customers.
Family was the cornerstone of Shirley’s life. She is survived by her children, Steve Smith (Dena) of Vincennes, IN, and Kim Pitcock of Bridgeport, IL. She was a source of unfaltering support and wisdom for her four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who filled her days with joy. Shirley’s bond with her family was unbreakable, and this included her cherished sister, Barb Nickless of Vincennes, IN, with whom she shared a lifetime of memories.
Though she was preceded in death by her parents, James and Betty Nickless, and her three brothers, Shirley’s legacy of love and resilience continues to thrive through her family and countless friends. Her fondness for reading kept her mind sharp and spirit vibrant, often leading her to share stories and insights with those around her.
Shirley’s life is a testament to the strength found in simplicity and the impact of daily kindness. As we bid farewell to a woman of grace and genuine goodness, we carry forward the wisdom and compassion she shared with us all. Shirley’s presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit will forever guide and inspire the lives she touched.
There will be a burial held at Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House.
