Knox County Sheriff Doug Vantlin is warning against a “spoofing” scam making the rounds in Knox County. The scam is someone has “spoofed”—or is using the Sheriff’s number—to convince victims of their imminent arrest if they don’t pay on digital payment apps—like Bitcoin.
Sheriff Vantlin assures the public that they would never acceptr payment over the phone, and would never ask for payment through digital currency, gift cards, or anything similar. Further, legal matters—including warrants or jury duty—are handled by written notice through the Knox County Court system.
If you get a call like that, hang up immediately, verify independently through the Sheriff’s Department, and report it to law enforcement as soon as possible.
