The Indiana Legislature has advanced a bill that would in a sense criminalize some homeless people across the state. The bill would make it a misdemeanor for homeless individuals to camp out on state property.
The bill recently cleared the Indiana House. However, Knox County Sheriff Doug Vantlin says the vote was by no means unanimous. The bill was opposed by the Indiana Sheriffs’ Association. Vantlin says the bill’s enforcement could lead to more overcrowded Indiana jails.
Examples of offenses could include homelessness people sleeping on park benches, or under bridges.
