Major Howard William Hatcher, a pillar of the Vincennes community and a man who was larger than life but insisted he was “joe average”, passed away at the age of 82 on March 21, 2026. Born in Vincennes, Indiana, on March 24, 1943, Howard dedicated his life to his family, his country, and his hometown.
Howard joined the military at 17 and proudly served in the Air Force as a K-9 officer during the Vietnam War with his cherished dog, Amore. After serving his country, he embarked on a career of serving his community as an officer for the Vincennes Police Department for 31 years. Howard’s leadership and desire to contribute to the welfare of the citizens did not end there; he later became the mayor of Vincennes, bringing about positive change and improvement to his city. In his professional career, he also served as a member on the Vincennes Police Department Merit Board, the Knox County Public Defender Board, the Local Emergency Planning Committee and as the Knox County Emergency Preparedness Officer for Homeland Security, demonstrating his lifelong commitment to the safety of his neighbors and friends. His efforts also included coaching T-ball and YMCA football. Many knew him as a friend, father-figure, and mentor. He was humble and never wanted to take credit for projects around the city such as the baseball field, soccer field, and the local recycling program.
On November 28, 1980, Howard married his soulmate, Carla, at Mariah Creek Chapel in Vincennes. Their union was one filled with love, respect, and adoration for each other, making their home a welcoming haven for family, friends, and numerous cherished memories.
After dedicating his life to public service, Howard uncovered a newfound passion for gardening and landscaping, transforming his world with beauty and purpose. He could often be found tending to his yard, nurturing his plants and flowers with as much care and devotion as he did his responsibilities to the people around him. He was a devout Catholic and regularly attended mass to pray for our sins.
Howard is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Carla Broady Hatcher of Vincennes, IN. He was a loving father to his children, Tommy Hatcher of Indianapolis, Angela Hatcher of Arizona, Dr. Rachel Hatcher Hardy (Will) of Sahuarita, AZ, Madeline Hatcher Seed (Aubrey) of Lawrenceville, IL, and Broady Lee Hatcher of Chandler, AZ. He was a doting grandfather to his eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild, who will miss his wisdom and kindness. He also leaves behind his sisters Debbie Madison of Vincennes, IN, and Mary Ann Davis of Albion, IL, whom he adored. Howard’s life was predeceased by his parents, John Howard and Margia (Frund) Hatcher; his granddaughter Aiden Hatcher; and his brothers, Donald and John Hatcher.
His legacy is one of love, resilience, and service. His memory will continue on forever through his humor, accomplishments, family, and improvements to the city. There aren’t enough words or space to convey the lasting impression he left.
Howard’s last words were, “I now know what the most important thing in life is. It’s to love each other the way God loves us. It’s ok to be scared but don’t be afraid.”
Mr. Hatcher requested no public funeral services. Online condolences and fond memories may be made at www.fredrickandson.com. In lieu of flowers, Howard would have appreciated donations to a local charity that is closest to your heart. Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home, Vincennes Chapel, is honored to be entrusted with Mr. Hatcher’s arrangements.
