Indiana Treasurer Daniel Elliott has placed the asset management firm BlackRock on a state watchlist. Elliott accuses BlackRock of making illegal environmental, social, or governance commitments.
State lawmakers gave his office the power to enforce a new ban on ESG investing in Indiana’s pension system in 2023. In a statement, Christopher Van Es, a spokesperson for BlackRock, defended the company’s investment strategies, and said its leaders “remain committed to Indiana.”
