Duke Energy is seeking a three-year extension to keep its Gibson power plant in southwest Indiana running until 2038, rather than its planned 2035 closure.
The utility proposes retrofitting the plant for dual-fuel use, allowing it to operate on natural gas or coal.
Duke says the extension is essential to manage increasing electricity demand, but environmental advocates argue it signals an overreliance on fossil fuels.
Indiana regulators will review Duke’s proposal, with more details expected in November.
