The Indiana Senate Elections Committee has approved bills to close primary elections to unaffiliated voters and shorten early voting. Early votes can be cast in-person for 28 days before an election right now, but the bill would reduce that to 14 days.
Senator Gary Byrne of Byrnesville is the author of the bill and says clerks have complained about not having enough to staff early voting centers for 28 days. The bill to close primaries would require a voter to choose between the Democratic or Republican parties when they register to vote, which is not currently required.
