Vincennes City Council members are still discussing different opinions concerning a set of statewide property tax cuts. Supporters believe it will mean over a billion dollars back to property owners. However, opponents fear the cuts will take too much away from funding various government groups.
Even though Council was split on the issue, Council president Brian Grove is glad the split only covers that one issue.
The issue was a resolution opposing the State Senate bill. In a 4-3 vote, Council passed the resolution, backed by Vincennes Mayor Joe Yochum. Grove opposed the bill’s opposition; he feels even the the cuts pass as they area, the City could weather the storm.
In his comments prior to the vote, Mayor Yochum told Council the City could lose over two million dollars in funding as the bill stands now. He also remarked that several groups representing tax-funded bodies statewide have also opposed the measure at it now stands.
