Mary R. Barmes, a beacon of loving commitment to her family and community, peacefully passed away on September 22, 2025, at Gentlecare nursing home in Vincennes, Indiana. Born on April 22, 1936, in Vincennes, she was the cherished child of the late Joseph Schlomer and Edna Bowers Schlomer.
With a life marked by deep affection and generosity, Mary’s legacy is carried on by her devoted children: Janice Blubaum (Kyle) and Bret Barmes (Kim) of Vincennes, Becky Snyder (Stan) of California, Lori Cardinal (Jeff) of Vincennes, and her son-in-law, Brad Cannon of Kentucky. She was the proud and loving grandmother of twelve grandchildren and the great-grandmother of sixteen great-grandchildren, who will always remember her warmth and kindness. Her brother, Cletus Schlomer of Valparaiso, will also hold the memories of his sister close to his heart. Mary was reunited in eternal rest with her beloved husband of nearly five decades, Max E. Barmes, her daughter Cindy Cannon, and her four siblings.
Mary’s journey through life as a dedicated schoolteacher left an indelible impact on countless young lives in her community. Not only did she nurture minds in the classroom, but she also tended to hearts and souls as a Eucharist Minister and Lector. Her leadership further shone as an officer of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary.
Just as she helped cultivate the earth on Barmes Farms alongside her husband, Mary cultivated a rich life of service, earning her accolades such as the Simon Brute Award in 2001 and the Knox County Chapter Volunteer of the Year in Blood Services. Her departure leaves a void in the hearts of those she touched, but her spirit and teachings continue to inspire.
Mary’s unwavering faith, the love she so freely shared, and her tireless dedication to those around her have forever shaped the fabric of her community. Her family and friends take solace in the knowledge that her legacy is enduring, a testament to a life well-lived and a heart generously given. Mary R. Barmes’s memory will forever be cherished, and her influence will ripple through generations. In the hearts of her loved ones and the many she served, she remains an everlasting presence.
