A Russian man was sentenced to nearly 13 years in prison for being behind ransomware attacks. 26 year-old Aleksei Volkov was sentenced for the crime in the Southern Indiana District federal court.
As part of the sentence, Volkov will be required to pay back over 9.1 million dollars in restitution to victims of his ransomware attacks. In court, Volkov admitted he and un-named co-conspirators hacked into computer networks, stole data, employed ransomware, was paid in cryptocurrencey, and shared the proceeds among themselves. The alleged co-conspirators have not been named.
Volkov was arrested in Rome on the charge, and extradited to the United State to face the charge in the Southern Indiana federal court.
