John R. Luking, age 81, a Vincennes native, passed away April 6, 2026 at his home with his family by his side. He was the loving husband of Sharon (Sue) Seitzinger Luking of 61 years.
Born October 29th, 1944, John was the son of the late Herman and Frances
(Zeabart) Luking.
Early on, John worked as a crane operator at Vincennes Steel. In 1971, John began his career as a Firefighter with the Vincennes City Fire Dept where he worked for 28 years before retiring in 1998. During that time he held many titles such as Captain, Assistant Fire Chief and Fire Chief.
In 1970 John began his own company, John Luking Drywall Service, after many years and much experience hanging and finishing drywall.
John was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating. He took pride in his vegetable gardening in the summer, playing his guitar, working puzzles, and baking. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and St. Johns Catholic Church.
Along with his wife, John is survived by his daughters, Joni (Ron) Culp of Paducah Ky, Jamie (Tony) Clark of Vincennes, Kathy (Nat) Beck of Oakland City, IN and Joseph “Joe Bob” (Carissa) Luking, Vincennes, IN and 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. John is also survived by his fraternal twin brother, Jim (Nancy)
Luking and Margaret Hislip of Vincennes.
John was proceeded in death by his older brother William L. (Frieda) Luking, and sister Mary (Gordon) Spurgeon.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, April 10, 2026 at 11:00 at St. John’s Catholic Church with visitation from 9:30 until the time of service also at the church. With Father Tony Ernst officiating. Burial will follow at a later date in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home in honored to be entrusted with Mr. Luking’s arrangements.
