James L. Southgate, age 82, of Freelandville, Indiana, passed away on June 5, 2026. He was born on April 14, 1944, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to his parents, Edward Southgate and Norma “Mikesell” Smith.
James graduated from high school and, afterwards, spent many years working in salvage yards and maintaining properties. He approached his responsibilities with quiet determination and took pride in doing his work well.
Outside of work, James enjoyed his favorite pastimes, fishing and cars. Whether he was spending time outdoors or talking about automobiles, he found happiness in the things he truly loved. He was also a former member of the Bicknell French Club, where he shared fellowship and community with others.
James will be remembered with love by his nephew, John Southgate Jr.; his niece, Marla “Southgate” Gammons (Mike); his great-niece, Nicole “Southgate” Sloan; his two great-nephews, Kyle and Ryan Gammons; his three great-great-nieces; his seven great-great-nephews; and several cousins. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him and cherished the time they shared with him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, James Smith; his great-nephew, Benjamin Southgate; and his brothers, John Southgate Sr. and Dwayne McDonough. Though he has been reunited with those who went before him, his memory will remain a lasting part of the lives of his family and friends.
