The Red Skelton Museum of American Comedy is featuring an exhibit to remember Skelton’s breakdown of the Pledge of Allegiance. Skelton made his famous recital on the Red Skelton Show on January 14th, 1969.
Skelton’s widow, Lothian Skelton, says some tried to keep Skelton from performing the pledge on his show. Mrs. Skelton praised Red’s legacy of both entertainment—and patriotism.
In the recital, Skelton pointed back to the recital’s origins—a teacher in a classroom in what is now Tecumseh-Harrison Elementary School. The Red Skelton Museum is just down the road from the Second Street school, on the campus of Vincennes University.
