The National Weather Service has rated a brief tornado in central Knox County as an EF-1, with winds of around 100 miles an hour. The twister was on the ground for one and a half miles, and was 150 yards wide.
The tornado started in a grove of trees near Mariah Creek just east of U-S 41. It traveled over State Road 550, as well as Morgan and Hollingsworth Roads, before lifting southeast of Hollingsworth Road. The largest damage was to a barn just off Hollingsworth Road; several trees were also affected. The twister also just missed North Knox Intermediate School near State Road 550. The school itself was not harmed by the tornado.
National Weather Service personnel made the tornado call from drone footage supplied by the Knox County Emergency Management Agency.
Meanwhile, National Weather Service officials from Paducah will be in Winslow today. They will review damage from a possible tornado that hit in that part of Pike County, and release a report following their investigation.
