Pete Carter, 89, Vincennes

Peter “Pete” Carter, 78, of Vincennes, Indiana, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2026. He was born in Vincennes on May 21, 1948, to the late Buell and Frieda Carter. Pete graduated from Lincoln High School in 1966 and attended Vincennes University. On June 18, 1972, he married the love of his life, Marcia Summers, with whom he shared 54 wonderful years of marriage. Pete proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He worked for the Vincennes Housing Authority for 20+ years.

Pete was deeply involved in his community throughout his lifetime and proudly dedicated 50 years to the Vincennes Township Volunteer Fire Department serving as assistant chief for many years. He was a member of the Indiana Volunteer Fire Association, Fraternal Order of Police, American Legion, and Community United Methodist Church. He also served as the chairman of the annual sausage feed for several years and took great pride in giving his time to others. Outside of his many years of service, Pete enjoyed attending the Indy 500 and Frog Follies, keeping up with the news and current events, and spending time with family and friends. He was known for his wonderful sense of humor, his love of collecting tools, taking care of Camp Wildwood, sitting on his porch watching storms, traveling with friends, and gathering with his friends at the Knights of Columbus for lunch. Pete’s dedication, humor, and genuine love for his community will be remembered and deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents Buell and Frieda Carter; siblings Pat Carter and Paul Carter.

Pete is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marcia Carter; children Heather Black and Michael (Stephanie) Carter; grandchildren Kevi Black and Bronx Carter; sister-in-law Carol Carter; nephew Matt Carter; great-nephew Keith Carter; and close cousins Rebecca (John) Miller and Ranah (Joe) Rusch.

Goodwin-Sievers is honored to be entrusted with the care of Mr. Carter. Visitation will be held Monday, August 31, 2026, from 10-12 pm at 524 Broadway Street with the graveside with full military rites following immediately after visitation at Memorial Park Cemetery.
