After 18 years of working and waiting, the City of Vincennes has received word the City Levee has been certified by FEMA. The long-awaited word became a foregone conclusion, following what was an “iffy” proposition in 2006.
Vincennes Water Utilities general manager Kirk Bouchie gave the good news at last night’s session; Bouchie gives the uncertainty they felt over certification when the recertification word came to them first in 2006. The remaining part of the protection is provided by the Brevoort Levee to the south of the City Lervee. Part of the certification came from improvements to the Brevoort Levee; Bouchie tells us the Brevoort Levee originally was– and now is– considered adequate.
Even with certification accomplished, City officials remind everyone Levee maintenance must continue to keep it up to federal certification standards.
