Southern Illinois Sheriff’s Deputy Killed, His Accused Killer in Custody

The suspected killer of an Illinois sheriff’s deputy is in custody after an hours-long, multi-state manhunt.

Ray Tate is in custody after he allegedly killed Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Riley early Wednesday morning.

Illinois State Police say Tate initially shot Riley during a traffic stop on Interstate 64 and stole his police vehicle.

He left the police cruiser abandoned on the interstate and then carjacked a semi and held the driver against his will until they reached St. Peters, Missouri.

From there, he committed a series of carjackings, robberies and shootings.

Tate eventually made his way back across the river into Illinois in another stolen vehicle, which was eventually located at a rural home outside Carlyle.

He committed a home invasion there and took the homeowner and kidnapped victim hostage.

After a SWAT situation, Tate was taken into custody.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Department had been searching for Tate following an attempted carjacking earlier this month at the Red Roof Inn on South Old Decker Road in Vincennes.
