Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show Illinois lost enough residents to populate Springfield in 2022. The .08% decrease was the third-largest population loss in the country this year behind New York and California. More than 141,000 residents left the state.
This is now the ninth consecutive population loss Illinois has recorded.
