Substance Use Disorder Deaths Up Statewide

More Hoosiers are struggling with substance use disorders, according to the latest America’s Health Rankings Report. State data shows six Indiana residents died each day from a drug overdose in 2020, a 21% increase from the previous year. Chief Medical Officer for United Healthcare Dr. Rhonda Randall says that mirrors a nationwide trend. She points to new data showing drug deaths nationwide increased by 30 percent.

There were more than 2,800 drug overdose deaths in Indiana in 2020, according to the CDC. Over the past two decades, more than 15,000 Hoosiers have lost their lives to drug overdose, according to the Indiana Department of Health.
