Bassler: Reading Proficiency a Priority

With nearly 1 in 5 Hoosier third graders struggling to read at their grade level, Indiana is working to improve literacy instruction to ensure at least 95% of students can read proficiently by 2027.
State Senator Eric Bassler of Washington says one step the state has taken to address reading proficiency is allowing eligible teachers to earn a literacy endorsement by enrolling in a free professional development course.
Created by a law Bassler supported, this course offers teachers tools and necessary training to provide science of reading instruction in the classroom.
Teachers can also receive up to $1,200 for completing the course.
Bassler says literacy is a fundamental skill that helps set our children up for successful futures.
