The Indiana House is considering passage of Senate Bill 1—a bill to reform and reduce property tax caps statewide. The bill was crafted, and has passed, its chamber of origin—the State Senate. Jasper Republican State Senator Daryl Schmitt voted for the measure. He explains the act, as it is written now, would actively save property holders over a billion dollars statewide.
However, the bill is getting opposition from various municipal and other bodies funded by property taxes—including the City of Vincennes. In a resolution passed last night by Vincennes City Council, they feel the revenue cut could lead to hard choices concerning various City services.
