Maurice J. Vieck, 102, of Vincennes, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2026.
He was born in Vincennes on October 4, 1923, to Christopher and Cecilia (Kaiser) Vieck. He graduated Lincoln High School, Class of 1942, and continued his education at Vincennes University and Purdue University.
Maurice was a lifelong farmer who built, owned, and operated both Vieck’s Golden Gro Fertilizer and Maurice Vieck & Sons Farm, which today is owned and operated by his sons and grandsons.
Maurice served on the South Knox School Board, the Knox County Farm Bureau Board of Directors, and the Knox County Chamber of Commerce, where he chaired the Agriculture Business Committee for three terms. He also served as a Director of the Southern Indiana Agricultural Improvement Association and as President of the Rural Youth Club in 1947.
Maurice attended Mass every day that he could. At the age of 102, he still got onto his knees during the prayers. Other churchgoers could see the effort that kneeling cost him, and some told him that, at his age, he could simply stay seated. Maurice answered, “He hung on a cross for me; the least I can do is kneel.” He was a faithful member of St. Francis Xavier Parish, a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus—of which he was a member since 1945—and he faithfully served the St. Vincent de Paul Society for over six decades. He also supported priestly and religious vocations through the Serra Club and was a member of the Brute Society. His life of service was recognized with both the Bishop Brute Society Award in 2003 and the Mother Teresa Service Award in 2013.
Maurice was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 48 years, Doris (Reeve) Vieck; his wife, Jane (Lamb) Vieck; his eldest son, Stephen Vieck; his daughter-in-law, Margaret (Ron) Vieck; and his siblings Fr. Larry Vieck, Fr. Hilary Vieck, Richard Vieck, Agnes Ottensmeyer, Loretta Holl, Rita Primus, and Joe Vieck.
He is survived by ten of his children: Maureen Vieck, Peggy Scissom, Ron Vieck, Ed (Lee Ann) Vieck, Bill (Debbie) Vieck, Janie Marcinkowski, Christine Vieck, Brian (Kathy) Vieck, Alan (Jean) Vieck, and Lori (Christian) Schuler; his brother, Charlie Vieck; along with 26 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4:00–8:00 pm on Friday, April 24, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with a Rosary beginning at 3:30 pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Saturday, April 25, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with Rev. Tony Ernst officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary
Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Frederick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 1612 Main Street, Vincennes, IN 47591. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.fredrickandson.com.
