A senate proposal that may become law would require high school students to pass a civics test in order to graduate passed a state senate vote last week.

Thursday, Senators passed on a 31-17 vote a requirement that high school students pass the same citizenship test that is required for immigrants to become citizens of the United States.

While it’s currently unclear if the house will take up the measure, the new test will be a requirement for the 2020-2021 school year if it becomes law.
