Several new traffic safety laws take effect in Illinois on January first.

Fines are going up in the New Year for reckless driving, passing a stopped school bus and speeding in a construction zone.

Rockford Senator Steve Stadelman says another law makes it illegal to stream movies or watch You-Tube on your phone while driving.

Additionally, the maximum penalty for hitting a construction worker increases from $10,000 to $25,000.
